Purify Your Home with a Salt Lamp

As we all know, the air in most cities today is loaded with toxins, exhaust fumes and other pollutants. But here’s the scary thing – so is the air in your home!

Shocking as it sounds, many homes and other indoor environments may contain air that’s just as toxic as the air outdoors. Chemicals from cleaning products, furniture, clothing and even food additives can fill a room with a slew of harmful toxins.

While it’s not always possible to avoid these pollutants in public, there ARE some ways to naturally clear the air in your home. With a Himalayan Salt Lamp.

What Is a Salt Lamp?

A Himalayan Salt Lamp is a solid block of crystal salt. This ancient salt is usually pinkish-orange in colour owing to its high concentration of trace minerals. The lamps are carefully carved out and fitted with a heat-producing light bulb, which activates the therapeutic properties of the salt.

How Does a Himalayan Salt Lamp Work?

Purifying the Air

Salt attracts water – and when heated by a light bulb, the salt lamp attracts the water molecules in the air. Although you can’t see it, the water vapour in your home is a ‘carrier’ for all the harmful toxins – chemicals, dust, pollen, cigarette smoke, animal dander and bacteria particles.

A Himalayan salt lamp works by attracting the water vapour in the air and drawing it into itself – along with all the nasties. Once these tiny pollutants have been drawn out of the air, they’re deposited into the salt and trapped. The lamp then releases the “clean” water vapour back into the air, free from contaminants.

Generating Negative Ions

As well as purifying the air, Himalayan salt lamps are believed to neutralise harmful electromagnetic radiation. The minerals in the salt are thought to emit negative ions, which may cancel out the potentially hazardous positive ions generated by electronics, such as cell phones and computers. By balancing out these ions, the salt helps to clear the air and make it easier to breathe, as well as reducing levels of disease-causing particles.

How Do I Care for My Salt Lamp?

Over time, you may notice that your Himalayan salt lamp develops a fine layer of crystals or even leak water when it is switched off. This is a sure sign that the lamp is working! The water is the moisture that it has drawn in from the air. Switching the lamp on will heat the lamp and allow it to dry out, so that it can continue to draw in vapour. It may help to give the lamp a quick rub-down with a soft cloth every few weeks or so.

Where Should I Put My Salt Lamp?

To reap the air-purifying benefits of the lamp, it’s best to put it wherever you spend the most time in your home. That could be beside your bed, on your desk – or, for some people, in front of the computer or TV! The more time you spend near your salt lamp, the more “purified air” you’re likely to breathe in, thanks to its toxin-trapping effects.

And if that’s not enough, the soothing pink glow of the lamp helps to create a sense of calm and peace.

How Do I Choose My Salt Lamp?

There’s a huge range of salt lamps out there – and not all of them are good! When choosing a Himalayan Salt Lamp, think size and colour. The darker the salt and the more of it, the more effective it will be at drawing in water. The larger the space, the larger the lamp!
