5 Hacks To Help You Stay Healthy This Holiday

By The Team @ Healthy Being   |   20 December 2019

It’s that time of year again! The holiday season is among us and we have been bombarded with feast, after feast, after cocktail, after feast.  So, how can we stay on track with our health, lifestyle, and diet during this crazy time? Aren’t we glad you asked! Luckily, we have five hacks to help you combat cravings and temptations throughout this holiday season. Let’s enjoy the Christmas holidays without sabotaging all the hard work we’ve accomplished in the year! Here are our favourite ways to stay healthy throughout this holiday season.

Eat consciously

This is probably the most important, yet the most difficult tip of all time is to eat consciously! Make sure you take some time out to think about what’s entering your body and think a little carefully about how you indulge. While you eat, it takes a few moments to send the “I’m full” message to the brain. Although it’s hard, take your time while eating and try to have breaks after your first serving to notice how full you are instead of going for seconds.

Eat before attending

The life hack of the holiday season! Never go out on an empty stomach. When you are hungry, you mindlessly eat and when this is paired with a party with plenty of delicious food, it’s hard not to recreationally eat. Make sure you have a bite to eat before attending any event so that you are full before arriving. Try snacking on healthy nuts, dried fruit, or even healthy cookies. This way, when you arrive, you’re not hungry and already have filled the tank instead with healthy foods rather than recklessly eating all those Christmas sweets. We will definitely be living by this rule all holiday season long.

Look for the smallest plate in the room

You’ve just walked into the party, made your way to politely say hello to everyone in the room, the Christmas music is playing loud and suddenly, your eyes are locked. In the corner of the room, there it is, the "all you can eat" buffet. All you want to do is pack your plate until its spilling of food, sweets, and treats. The only way to get through this situation, is finding yourself the smallest plate you can. This hack helps as you avoid overpacking a larger plate. This also helps to get you thinking about what is really worth your calorie intake.

Try sticking to foods that you may not be able to get all year round. Those chocolates and lollies you can grab from the supermarket at any time of year are definitely not worth wasting your calories on. Instead, gingerbread, Christmas pudding, and your grandma's special pavlova that she only makes at Christmas time is definitely worth every single calorie.

Healthy alternatives

Switch it up! The best way to enjoy your favourite Christmas dishes is by replacing some ingredients with healthy substitutes. When cooking, look for the healthier options for ingredients. For example, instead of using vegetable oil, why not try coconut oil. Instead of sugar, artificial sweetener, instead of sour cream, Greek yoghurt, or even replacing potatoes for sweet potatoes. Those are a few small examples that can make a massive difference during these holidays.

Don’t be so hard yourself!

After all, it is the holidays and you should allow yourself to have a break! The Christmas holidays only come around once a year so why shouldn’t you enjoy yourself? You deserve to enjoy and know that you can get right back to your healthy lifestyle right back in the new year.

From all of us at the Healthy Being Team, we wish you a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!
