5 Superfoods You Probably Never Heard Of

Superfoods. We’ve all heard the buzz word, and we’ve tried out best to add them in our day to day diets. Well now, we have just found a couple more that you MUST add to the list! These are our top 5 superfoods that you probably have never heard of – but should definitely be eating!

Knowing the benefits of superfoods, and what they can do to our health and wellbeing makes us more motivated to actually include them in our daily intake. Superfoods are usually nutrient dense foods that are loaded with plenty of vitamins and minerals. The qualities of superfoods are endless, from enhancing overall health to fighting disease, it’s no wonder so many of us obsessed with making sure we know them all and know their benefits.

Berry nice!

Our first pick you might have heard of. The magic superfood Goji berries. These tiny little berries are the kings of longevity! Their history stem back to treating issues like diabetes, high blood pressure, fever and vision. Goji berries are high in nutrients and contain 18 kinds of amino acids (the good guys). They provide immune system support, promotes healthy skin and is able to protect the body against cancer because of their high levels of antioxidants. These guys are regarded as one of the highest sources of antioxidants, iron and many other minerals that are amazing for our health.

More than just hemp

We’ve raved about hemp seeds before and we are definitely going to do it again! Hemp seeds are PACKED with vitamins and minerals including vitamin E, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, iron, zinc and many more. They are also loaded with healthy fats and quality sources of protein that have the ability to reduce your risk of heart diseases. Simply sprinkle a spoonful on top of your meals like salads, yoghurts or smoothies and you are set! Honestly, it’s a yes from us!

Don't forget your roots

Now, this is one superfood you definitely haven’t heard of. Jicama is a root vegetable that has been hiding in the grocery store all this time. When you hear the benefits, you’ll be sure not to walk past again! Part of the bean family, jicama is rich in carbs and fibre. This superfood vegetable is great for digestion, improves heart health, can treat diabetes, benefits your bones and most importantly can reduce risks of cancer as it helps prevent damage to your cells.

Eat your greens! 

Maybe Mum was right all along… All these years later and we’ve finally realised that we should definitely be eating our greens. Green superfoods have and always will be one of the most important sources of vitamins. Green superfoods come in so many forms such as kale, bok choy, barley grass, spinach and seaweed (yes, from the ocean) and those are only a handful of the list of many more. They each have specific chemicals that create positive reactions to the human body, because of their antioxidants and inflammatory qualities.

They are called cruciferous vegetables and are part of the cabbage family. These superfood veggies are actual cancer fighters. They support the body to prevent blood clots, asthma, arthritis and they actually promote bone health and boost metabolism! Better listen to Mum next time!

Last but not least, a drink for literally everyone! Kefir is a fermented drink that is most commonly made from milk and tastes like yoghurt. It’s made up of grains such as yeast, milk proteins and healthy bacteria that has unbelievable benefits for our bodies. For all our vegan friends, don’t stress! There are plenty of non-dairy alternatives such as coconut milk, rice milk and coconut water. The superfood kefir is incredibly nutrient dense with proteins like vitamin B, calcium and potassium. It has the ability to improve digestion, reduce infections and can treat irritable bowel syndrome. Some more studies found that it may actually help your immune system as well!

There you have it, just a quick list of a few superfoods that you had never heard of but from today onwards, will make sure you include in your daily intake!
